Seasons of Sorrow
1977-78

62 x 62 x 3 inches
Cotton, linen, raffia, wool

Based on the myth of Demeter and Persephone, Seasons of Sorrow demonstrates the elegiac quality found in many of Bart's works of art. A barely discernible Greek cross woven in the center marks a place of intersection. At the bottom, three curved and nested swaths of woven linen, silk, wool, and cotton extend down and away from the object to suggest layers giving way to layers beneath. Tendrils of warp, reminiscent of tears or rain, hang from each and claim interconnectedness between emotional and physical depth. Bart exhibited Seasons of Sorrow in 1978 as part of her first solo exhibition at WARM Gallery.
